2022 Los Angeles Dodgers Player Reviews: Ryan Pepiot

Los Angeles Dodgers pitching prospect Ryan Pepiot saw 2022 signal a lot of growth and development as he tries to potentially find a permanent spot in their starting rotation next season.

The right-hander, whom Los Angeles selected in the third round of the 2019 MLB draft, built off a strong finish from last year to earn a non-roster invitation to Spring Training in 2022. Pepiot went on to start the season with Triple-A Oklahoma City, but was called up for his MLB debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 11.

Despite just three innings of work, the highly touted prospect showed off his big league ability and held Pittsburgh scoreless.

Throughout his 2022 campaign, Pepiot mostly found his role with the Dodgers as an in-place starter or was used in rare outfield situations. Spending most of his season with Oklahoma City, his Majors total on the year ended with seven starts, a 3-0 record and 3.47 ERA in 36.1 innings.

Pepiot allowed 14 earned runs and struck out 42 during his time with the Dodgers.

Notably, Pepiot was one of the best pitchers this season in the entire Triple-A West Division. For OKC, he posted a 2.56 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 91.1 innings over 17 starts.

Pepiot allowed the fewest earned runs of any starter (minimum 90 innings) with 26, and ranked second only to Houston Astros top prospect Hunter Brown in best overall ERA.

Ryan Pepiot 2022 season highlight

Although he only totaled 36.1 Major League innings in 2022, Pepiot’s highlight this year was his MLB debut.

In a game the Dodgers would go on to win 3-1, Pittsburgh put runners on base in every game against the starter, but failed to score each time.

Especially highlighted by a bases-loaded jam in the second inning and Bryan Reynolds at the plate, Pepiot escaped unscathed as he struck out the 2021 All-Star swing.

Perhaps another major highlight for Pepio was throwing a career-high six innings against the Miami Marlins on August 21st.

The view of 2023

Even made clear by Pepiot himself, his rookie campaign will be remembered as a year of continued growth and development.

While his Major League sample may be small, based on past Minor League statistics, especially this past season, the future looks very bright for Pepiot.

Although his role in 2023 is still to be determined, it wouldn’t be too surprising if he claims one of the final spots in the Dodgers’ starting rotation. As shown time and time again, Pepiot could also find himself out of the squad.
