The Fort Dodge wrestling team returns to action here Thursday night, hosting Ankeny Centennial and Waterloo East.
Wrestling for both the girls and boys starts at 5:30pm inside the FDSH gym against the Jaguars and Trojans.
Coming off a first-place finish at the Don Miller Invitational, the Dodgers are fifth in the Class 3A two-team standings behind Southeast Polk, Bettendorf, Waverly-Shell Rock and Ankeny. Centennial is 10th, moving up to seventh after a runner-up finish at Don Miller and a doubleheader win over Urbandale.
Fort Dodge’s Dru Ayala is first at 113 pounds; Damarion Ross and Dreshaun Ross are second at 160 and 195, respectively; Koy Davidson is third at 138, Max Bishop is sixth at 120, Kane Butrick is eighth at 126 and Cal Hartman is 10th at 182.
Ankeny Centennial features ranked wrestlers Cale Vandermark (sixth, 106 pounds), Cody Vandermark (eighth, 113), Cael Wiener (eighth, 132), Lucas Bruhl (fourth, 145) and Zach English (sixth, 182 ).
On Saturday, the Dodgers will head south to the Mendenhall Invitational hosted by Ames. That field includes Little Cyclones, Ankeny, Ballard, Boone, Carroll, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Clarion-Goldfield/Dows, West Des Moines Dowling, Indianola, Iowa City High, Mason City, Papillion La Vista from Nebraska, Perry, Cedar Rapids Prairie, Spencer and West Des Moines Valley.
In the latest tournament standings, the Dodgers are fourth. Iowa City High is one spot behind and Ankeny in seventh.
Top-3 ranked wrestlers in their respective weights scheduled to compete at Mendenhall include Indianola’s Bowen Downey; Iowa City High’s Cale Seaton, Gabe Arnold and Ben Kueter; Jace Anderson of Ankeny; Ames’ Danarii Mickel; and Ralston Rumley and Carson Hagan of West Des Moines Dowling.
Some possible matchups featured would be Kueter vs. Rumley at 220 pounds, Dreshaun Ross vs. Mickel in a ninth grade battle; and Davidson against Ankeny’s Ben Hansen, who is fourth at 138.
Last year, Indianola won team gold over Ankeny and Fort Dodge, as the Top-8 all finished with over 100 points scored. Ayala, Gioimo, Davidson, Valley’s Theron Castle, Ballard’s Gabriel Christensen and Kueter are all returning champions.
The Dodger girls will be part of Mendenhall on Saturday as well, with senior Alexis Ross returning as the champion. Ames, Carroll, Centerville, Clear Lake, Des Moines Public Schools, Indianola, Mason City, Pella, Saydel and Waterloo East will also have girls in action.
