Alice Lorene Moffett Porter went peacefully home to be with her savior Jesus Christ on January 11, 2023. She was 96 years old.
Born in Campbell County, TN Lorene was the oldest of 9 children born on September 18, 1926 to the late Monroe and Ruby Moffett. The family moved to Rhea County around 1934 using a mule and wagon. Also known as Rene, she graduated from Spring City High School and Carson Newman College. Mrs. Lorene taught grades 3 through 5 for Rhea County Schools before becoming the bride of Garland Robert Porter on December 18, 1948 after his return from serving in the Navy during World War II. At Wolf Creek Baptist Church, she sang solo, in trios and quartets, and in the choir, taught Sunday School, worked with the youth, and was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union. Lorene was the first local director of the Wolf Creek Vacation Bible School. She also served as a VBS director at several churches in East Tennessee and North Alabama while her family relocated due to her husbands work with TVA. Outside of church Lorena enjoyed watching birds in her back yard while working in her vegetable garden. She loved to sing and was an avid recipe collector with an impressive collection of over 60 organized recipe boxes.
Lorene is preceded in death by her parents – Monroe and Ruby Moffett, her husband – Garland Porter, daughter – Rebecca Jane Porter ‘Little Becky’, sister and sister and father-in-law Sara (Earl) Hudson, Edd Moffett, Glenn (June) Moffett , Taft Moffett, (James Clarke, John Cochran, Kenneth Pendleton) and Boyd Moffett along with several nieces and nephews.
Survivors include daughter Susan Porter (Tim) Jones of Evensville, Tennessee; siblings and father-in-law Sue Moffett, Maxine Moffett, Imogene Pendleton, Addie (Paul) Talent of Spring City, Tennessee, Kenny (Linda) Moffett of Cleveland, Tennessee; grandchildren – Alisha (Sam) Owen, Robert (Leanne) ; great-grandchildren Gavin, Natalie and Victoria; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 14th at 3:00 PM at Wolf Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Forgey. Burial will follow in Porter-Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1-3 pm at the church.
