St. Louis may be a newcomer to Major League Soccer, but the region has already contributed to the league.

In numbers compiled by the Elias Sports Bureau, seven players in the league list their hometown as St. Louis. Among American cities, only New York with 11 has more. Las Vegas and Seattle are next with six, and then Chicago has five.

These figures, of course, need some perspective. Only four players list their hometown as Los Angeles, although three others are from communities that are part of the city of Los Angeles but go by their community name, and another 12 are from other cities in the county. of Los Angeles. While only five players are listed as being from Chicago, another 10 are from the Chicago suburbs.

But even then, when looking at metropolitan areas as a whole, St. Louis stays well. Eleven players in the league are from the greater St. Louis area. And, for those looking for more fodder for the initial rivalry with Kansas City, 11 St. Louis area players. .

City SC has three players on its roster who hail from the St. Louis area. Glover has played in one MLS game and Creek none.

But St. Louis has produced many other current MLS players who have gotten plenty of playing time. Forward Will Bruin, now with Austin FC, is in his 13th season in the league and has 78 career goals. Nashville SC goalkeeper Joe Willis is in his 13th season and has been one of the best goalkeepers in MLS. Tom Barlow of the New York Red Bulls is in his fifth season.

Others in the league include defender Kipp Keller of Austin FC, forward Jack Lynn of Orlando City SC, goalkeeper Patrick Schulte of the Columbus Crew, defender Daniel Munie of the San Jose Earthquakes and defender Jack Maher of Nashville SC. (Maher’s brother Josh plays for City2.) The poll was of players on rosters as of April 20, so SLU graduate John Klein is not in the numbers.

And in case you’re keeping score, three of the players went to Chaminade: Barlow, Lynn and Willis. No other school has more than one.

Missouri State has placed 10 players in the league, which ties Maryland for 12th overall. California has produced the most players with 61, followed by New York with 28, Florida with 22 and Illinois with 19.

City SC striker Klauss did not train with the team on Thursday and is on course to miss his fifth game in a row.

“Klauss is week-to-week now,” City SC coach Bradley Carnell said. “We just have to see. He has some good days and some bad days, and we can all learn from that because we’re not dealing with robots, we’re dealing with feelings and pain, emotions and hurt. We’re hoping he’ll be back sooner rather than later, but there’s no guarantee.”

Asked if that meant he was out for Saturday’s game against Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Carnell said, “More than likely.”

Klauss left the Colorado game on April 22 in the 61st minute with a left quad injury. The initial diagnosis was 10 to 14 days, but he is now over a month. Klauss practiced with the team last Friday, and Carnell hoped at the time that Klauss might be on the roster for the Sporting Kansas City game last week, but that didn’t happen.

Klauss is still the team’s top scorer with five goals.

Midfielder Rasmus Alm, who has missed three games with an abdominal injury, returned to action on Thursday, but Carnell didn’t sound too optimistic.

“Alm is trending in the right direction,” Carnell said. “We will have to see how he goes tomorrow, but I have no hope. We just have to see what he does medically and how his body reacts.”

Caden Glover is also out with a rib injury.

Even with two of their best attacking players out with injuries, City SC are second in the league with 26 goals.

Klauss may not be playing, but he is selling. Jerseys with Klauss on the back are ranked 23rd among sales on MLSstore.com. He is the only City SC player in the top 25.

LAFC’s Carlos Vela has the top-selling jersey, followed by two Nashville SC players, Hany Mukhtar and Walker Zimmerman.
