Going to NYC for New Year’s Eve? MTA says it’s best way to travel


Need to go or get around New York City on New Year’s Eve? The MTA says using its services is still the best way to beat traffic.
Some important things to keep in mind for New Year’s Eve on Saturday:
- There will be additional rail service on the metro and commuter tracks.
- An alcohol ban begins at noon on the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North. It runs until noon on New Year’s Day.
- MTA police will have an increased presence at Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal to enforce the weekend alcohol ban.
Long Island Rail Road
Friday, December 30
On Friday, December 30, the LIRR will operate on a regular weekday schedule, with the addition of 13 eastbound trains in the afternoon.

On Saturday, December 31, the LIRR will operate on a weekend/holiday schedule with the addition of additional evening westbound trains. For westbound customers attending events in New York City, the LIRR will operate 10 additional evening trains westbound to Penn Station.
New Year’s Day
On Sunday, January 1, the LIRR will operate on a regular weekend/holiday schedule. Fifteen additional early morning eastbound trains will operate on Long Island from Penn Station.
Metro-North Railway

On Saturday, December 31, Metro-North will operate on a Saturday schedule. Additional departure service from Grand Central Terminal will operate after midnight until 5:00 a.m.
On the West of Hudson lines, additional service will operate after midnight on the Pascack Valley and Port Jervis lines.
New Year’s Day
On Sunday, January 1, Metro-North will operate on a Sunday schedule.
Monday, January 2
On Monday, January 2, Metro-North will operate on a Saturday schedule with additional service on the East and West Hudson lines.
New York City Subway

On Saturday, December 31, the subways will operate according to the Saturday schedule with some exceptions.
Additional subway service will operate on lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, C, D, L, N, Q, R and S on New Year’s Eve.
Beginning at 11:45 a.m., northbound 1 trains will cross 50th Street and N, Q, R trains will cross 49th Street in both directions.
Manhattan-bound D trains will cross 155th Street from 11:45 PM on Friday, December 30th until 5:00 AM on Monday, January 1st.
New Year’s Day & New Year’s Day was observed
On Sunday, January 1 and Monday, January 2, the subways will operate according to the Sunday schedule.
Manhattan-bound D trains will cross 155th Street from 11:45 PM on Friday, December 30th until 4:00 AM on Monday, January 1st.
New York City Buses

Paratransit is operating with full service. Please note alternate drop-off locations when making reservations on NYC Open Street corridors. Specifically, New Year’s Eve closes around the Times Square area.
