New York City high school principal who teaches ‘love and respect’ involved in scuffle against student: Report

A New York high school principal was involved in a fight with a student in late October, according to a report.

Brett Schneider, the principal of the Bronx Cooperative High School, was seen fighting with a teenager in a video posted on social media said to be dated October 22, 2022, according to the New York Post.

While the New York City Police Department says school security officers called 911 to report a fight, no arrests were made.

When asked about the fight, the students said it happened a day or two after a fight between a boy and a girl ended with the girl spilling milk on him. The students added that the principal got involved when the girl’s relative confronted the boy at school and punched him.

“And then the principal tried,” one student told the New York Post. “He looked like a boxer. I was like, “Wow, this is incredible.”

Several students said it appeared Schneider was trying to protect the adult who came to punch the male student.

“This is a grown man. So, as a grown man, why are you helping another grown man fight a child?” another student said.

“Kids are less likely to get into fights. When there’s a fight, they know they won’t be demonized. They have a moment of grace when they can understand what happened and why. Finding creative responses to conflict can be life-changing,” Schneider said.

Bronx Cooperative High School’s website states that “Teachers work with students on social justice issues through weekly community circles and creatively resolve conflict through restorative circles, conversations, and conferences.”
