Toll hike breakdown for New York-New Jersey bridges, tunnels: This is what it will cost after Sunday
Drivers traveling between New York and New Jersey can expect to see higher E-ZPass fees starting Sunday, January 8.
Last month, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey voted to approve toll increases at the agency’s six interstate crossings as part of the agency’s $8.3 billion 2023 budget.
These increases will affect the Lincoln Tunnel, the Holland Tunnel and the George Washington Bridge, as well as the three New Jersey-bound bridges of Staten Island, the Goethals Bridge, the Bayonne Bridge and the Outerbridge Crossing.
The increases were determined through an inflation-based schedule, which was mandated by the Port Authority board in 2008. This schedule triggers automatic increases whenever the cumulative impact of inflation on existing toll rates reaches $1, as measured by the increase in last.
For most drivers, the cash-by-mail fee will increase from $16 to $17, with the E-ZPass peak hour fee increasing from $13.75 to $14.75 and the off-hour fee peak E-ZPass will increase from $11.75 to $12.75.
However, not everyone pays the same toll to cross Port Authority bridges and tunnels.
Toll rates vary based on E-ZPass enrollment, vehicle type, and time of day, with higher rates during peak hours, larger vehicles, and those using Tolls-by-Mail.
Weekday peak hours are defined as 6am to 10am and 4pm to 8pm, with weekend peak hours ranging from 11am to 9pm Outside Hours peak hours are defined as all hours outside the aforementioned peak hours. Night hours for trucks are set from Sunday to Thursday, from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning.
Tolls are collected only when entering New York, and all Port Authority crossings are cashless and no longer accept cash payments. Those without E-ZPass receive their bills in the mail.
