Humble Bundle launches Black History Month bundle

A new game bundle has launched on Humble Bundle to celebrate Black History Month.

The bundle includes eight different games by Black creators or featuring Black characters, such as Mafia 3: Definitive Edition and Shadow Man Remastered.

Worth £108.75 in value, the pack can be bought for £8.09 or more, with the money raised to help support Gameheads – a technology training program helping young people on low incomes.

Mafia 3 Campaign Game – Is It Good?

“February is Black History Month, when people in the US and around the world look back and reflect on the struggles and hard-won achievements of people of color throughout history,” the accompanying post read.

“To help mark the month in our own way, we’ve put together a bundle of great games from creators of color alongside games with black protagonists – with proceeds helping to support the next generation of game developers and technology talents on their learning journeys.”

The pack is available globally, although Black History Month is celebrated in February in the US In the UK, it’s October.

“We’re not naive enough to think that a single game can cure racism — and that was never our intention. But at the end of the day, if we get people thinking about race and we get people thinking about what happening today, I think we’ve done something that very few games have done,” said Haden Blackman, Mafia 3’s creative director.

“Michael LeRoi, the protagonist of the game Shadow Man and the 1997 comic book series that inspired the game, was one of the first major protagonists of color in video games,” said Travis Escarfullery, director of design and production at Valiant Entertainment. “For many black gamers, he was their first playable hero that gave them representation in the media.”

In addition to the bundle, Humble Bundle is supporting two other charities.

The first is NPower, which helps military veterans and youth from underserved communities launch digital careers. The Humble community will have multiple opportunities to support this charity through in-store purchases and Choice memberships.

The second is the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, which will be supported by a special book package.

Most recently, Humble points out in his Black History Month blog post that new projects will come from the Black Game Developers Fund. This was a fund created after the killing of George Floyd to help black independent creators everywhere.

Humble said: “Thank you to everyone across the Humble community who continue to help us support all these great charities and organizations dedicated to justice and equality. While something as simple as picking up a few games may seem trivial, Your combined support quickly adds up to making a real impact for real people, real communities and today’s most critical causes.”
