TaxAct Texas Bowl game info + betting preview
- date: Wednesday, December 28, 2022
- Departure time: 9 p.m. ET
- TV channel: ESPN
- location: NRG Stadium, Houston, Texas
- Participants: Texas Tech Red Raiders (7-5) vs Ole Miss Rebels (8-4)
- BetMGM Sportsbook Odds: Ole Miss -3.5 (-165), O/U 71
Mississippi Rebels -3.5 at BetMGM
The Ole Miss Rebels (8-4, 4-7-1 ATS) will limp into the TaxAct Texas Bowl looking to snap the team’s ongoing three-game losing skid dating back to early November.
It was an overall successful Year 3 season in Oxford for Rebels HC Lane Kiffin, as he had Mississippi up to No. 7 in the nation after a 7-0 start that included wins over Kentucky and Auburn. Unfortunately, the Rebels’ perfect season was derailed by LSU after a 45-20 rout in Baton Rouge that was essentially the beginning of the end for Ole Miss. The Rebels lost four of their last five contests to finish 8-4 overall and now enter the Texas Bowl unranked.
As far as exceptions go for Ole Miss, it should be all systems go tonight despite losing a handful of players to the transfer portal. Aside from CB Miles Battle, none of the outgoing Rebels really made much of an impact on the current roster, so fans and bettors can expect an all-out effort tonight as Kiffin prepares for his fourth season leading the program.
Texas Tech Red Raiders +3.5 with BetMGM Sportsbook
The Texas Tech Red Raiders (7-5, 7-5 ATS) have experienced somewhat of a rollercoaster ride under first-year head coach Joey McGuire. After upsetting the No. 22 Texas Longhorns at home to improve to 3-1, Tech would lose four of five games to fall to 4-5 on the season.
The Red Raiders weren’t done though, as they would go on to win three straight games to end the 2022 season, picking up impressive wins over Iowa State on the road and Oklahoma in Lubbock to finish 7-5 overall and qualify for the a second bowl appearance in a row. McGuire’s 7-5 regular season finish marks the most wins for the program since Kliff Kingsbury’s 2015 team finished with the same record. Oddly enough, the 2015 Red Raiders also went on to play in the Texas Bowl against an SEC foe, falling to the LSU Tigers, 56-27.
After missing most of the season with a collarbone injury before leading Texas Tech to each of its last three wins, senior QB Tyler Shough will be under center again for this one. As for the rest of the roster, the Red Raiders will have to make up for some defensive deficiencies after the departures of DT Philip Blidi, S Reggie Pearson Jr. and S Kobee Minor, who all played in all 12 games. this season. The Red Raiders also lost superstar senior LB Tyree Wilson during the 43-28 win over Kansas, leaving another hole to fill on defense ahead of tonight’s Texas Bowl.
