Baseball defeats Mercer 11-3 on Wednesday

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Baseball scored 11 runs on 15 hits and defeated Mercer 11-3 on Wednesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Longhorns (6-7) held the lead throughout the game, with runs scored in each of the first four innings.

Rylan Galvan had his first career hit, a two-run home run, and finished going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Dylan Campbell also went 3-for-4 and had an RBI and two runs scored.

Ace Whitehead made his first career start on the mound and earned his first career win, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings in one start.

Texas took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first after Dylan Campbell walked, stole second and scored on a single by Guillemette.

The Longhorns put together a four-run second inning to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Jared Thomas led off the inning with a walk before Galvan launched a two-run homer to left field. Eric Kennedy singled and moved to second on an error and Porter Brown drove him in with an RBI double to left. Guillemette singled to bring Brown home and end the run.

The Longhorns scored four more runs in the bottom of the third to extend the lead to 9-0. The half began with back-to-back walks to Jack O’Dowd and Mitchell Daly. Thomas sacrificed runners in scoring position before Galvan lined an RBI single up the middle. An error allowed Galvan to move to second and both O’Dowd and Daly to cross the plate. Kennedy and Campbell paced the game with back-to-back RBI doubles.

In the bottom of the fourth, Texas added an insurance run to make it 10-0. O’Dowd and Daly both doubled and Galvan continued his big day with an RBI single.

Max Grubbs made his Longhorn debut in the outfield and pitched two efficient scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit and retired all six of his outs on ground balls.

Sam Walbridge pitched the sixth and Saturday, while Andre Duplantier II pitched a scoreless eighth.

Texas tacked on one more run in the eighth to make it 11-2. Campbell singled up the middle to lead off the game before his first career hit off Max Belyeu plated two runners. Peyton Powell hit an RBI single to round out the scoring for the Longhorns.

Mercer added another run in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Chris Stuart.

Texas continues this weekend, hosting Manhattan for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6:30 pm at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
