Story links SAN ANTONIO (AP) – Michael Penix Jr. threw for 287 yards and two touchdowns and No. 12 Washington held off No. 21 Texas 27-20 Thursday night in the Valero Alamo Bowl.

Penix led off with back-to-back scores of 75 and 90 yards in the second half to extend the Huskies’ lead to 17. He was 32 of 55, completed passes to eight receivers and connected with Taj Davis and Jalen McMillan for scores.

Texas scored 10 points late, pulling within seven points on a 26-yard field goal with 1:40 left, then failed on an onside kick. The Longhorns (8-5) regained possession at their own 16 with 32 seconds left, but the Huskies (11-2) didn’t let them get past the 40 before time expired.

Penix finished the season with 4,641 yards passing to break Washington’s 20-year season mark of 4,458 set by Cody Pickett. He was named the game’s offensive MVP. Bralen Trice was the game’s defensive MVP.

Wayne Taulapapa ran for 108 of the team’s 158 yards on the ground and added a touchdown.

The Huskies held the Longhorns to just 51 yards rushing, becoming just the third team all season to hold them to less than 100 yards on the ground.

Washington finished the 2022 season with an 11-2 record, marking just the 5th time in school history that the Huskies have reached 11 wins. Kalen DeBoer is the first UW coach to win a bowl game in his first season. Never before had UW won more than 8 games under a first-year coach.
