Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III Announces New Director of the Defense Innovation Unit > U.S. Department of Defense > Release

Today, the Department of Defense announced that Mr. Doug Beck will serve as the next Director of the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU).

Secretary Austin also announced in a memo the Department’s leadership updates to the DIU reporting and management structure. Under the reorganization, the director of the DIU will report directly to the Secretary of Defense, and the DIU will be under the authority, direction, and control of the Secretary of Defense.

In the memo, Secretary Austin said, “DIU’s mission is to accelerate commercial technology adoption at speed and scale, and these changes will further enable it to effectively execute this critical mission.”

Mr Beck has previous experience working with the DIU, having founded and led its joint reserve component from its inception in 2015 to 2019. His personal and unit awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal (two awards) , the Bronze Star Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon and the Presidential Unit Citation.
